Post Theme Song: Happy; Pharrell  Williams

Ten years ago on May 17, Massachusetts became the first state in the country to honor and celebrate same sex unions. Legally same sex couples can “marry” and receive benefits like traditional couples.

Gone are the days when, on behalf of my clients, I would call venues and other vendors to see if they would be comfortable working with same sex couples.

I’m grateful to have played a role in working with same sex couples. Their events are just as meaningful and emotional as traditional couples and their parties ROCK.

Below is a video & picture of Jen & Shannon who were married at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA. Their reception was full of love, lot’s of family and lot’s of dancing.

Joyce Banford and Linda Martineau were married on October 2. The outside ceremony and reception was held  at the Tuner’s Fall’s Rod & Gun Club. Luckily no shots were fired. 🙂 The name doesn’t do the venue justice. The club has a pavilion that overlooks the Connecticut River and mountains, a perfect backdrop for a Fall wedding.

A significant amount of rain fell for five day’s prior to their event. When Saturday came guests, staff and DJ Lori B were quite happy to see the sun. It set the tone for a very special event and  fun party.

Memorable Moments:

Joyce’s daughter in law flew in from Colorado. During the first dance she sang John Denver’s “Annie’s Song” while Linda’s nephew played guitar. Listening to this version gave me the opportunity to revisit the beauty of the song. The performance was outstanding and there was not a dry eye in the pavilion.

Linda’s 89-year-old mother “cut the rug with guests” during “We Are Family”. It was a pleasure to see her having so much fun. She had a smile on her face the whole afternoon and kept going and going.

After a few adult beverages members of Joyce’s softball team donned their uniform shirts and sang “The Twelve Day’s of Marriage” which was a parody of “The Twelve Day’s of Christmas”. The song was very creative and quite funny. Good job team.

The Party:

The dance floor was packed for 3 hours. I mixed the music up and played a wide variety of classic and new party music from artists like ABBA, Donna Summer, Lady Gaga, The B-52’s, The Zac Brown Band, BEP, Katy Perry, Neil Diamond, Wild Cherry, Beyoncé, Brooks & Dunn, Salt-N-Pepa and Michael Jackson.

Below are some comments that Joyce sent to me the next day.

From the boy’s at the Rod and Gun Club, ” this is the best event we’ve had in 10 years” The music was the best!!!!!

hb “..i have not rocked out and wiped the dance floor like that in a loooong time. thanks for finding each other so we could all be inspired and have a ton of fun, too!”

Thanks Lori! We all had a blast!! I think Linda and I danced every dance. My feet hurt, my hips ached but it was it was all worth it.

Linda says “You were ON IT Girl!!”  Thank you so much!!!!

I’m glad they chose Martini Productions to rock their party and be part of their special day.

Bethany & Carrie’s Wedding: August 20, 2010

Posted in Two Brides and Two Grooms on August 23, 2010 by djlorib

It was a perfect day for their outdoor ceremony at Stanley Park and it was a perfect reception at the Log Cabin.

Bethany & Carrie Blair

From the start of their event, the energy and excitement level was incredible. Having DJed their Jill & Jill in July, I saw a lot of familiar faces who wanted the party to continue.

For the Grand Entrance I changed things up a bit. Instead of having guests stand at their tables during introductions, I asked them to form a semi-circle around the dance floor which created an intimate welcome for members of the wedding party.

The video below show’s Carrie’s two children making their entrance before the couple of honor. Notice the lime green and pink up lighting in the Southampton Room. Awesome.

The are cake cutting ceremonies and there’s cake cutting Martini style, which is my signature wedding event. I ask everyone to gather around the couple to serenade them to the song “That’s Amore”.

Guests are given lyric sheets and raise their napkins each time the word amore is sung. It’s hard to forget 120 voices singing and celebrating before the first piece of cake is even sliced.

Their wedding is just weeks away and plans for a perfect ceremony and reception are coming together. I’m ready to bring the party bomb for my brides and can’t wait for the big day (August 20) to arrive. Below are a few highlights.

Ceremony and Reception: Both events will be held in Western Massachusetts. The ceremony will be held at The Stanley Park Rose Garden with the reception at The Log Cabin.

Bridal Colors: I wrote in an earlier blog that bright colors would be the trend this wedding season. Bethany & Carrie’s bridal colors are lime green and pink. The color combination is hot, bold and colorful.

What The Brides Are Wearing: Carrie is wearing an off the shoulder bridal gown and is looking to possibly add a splash of pink to it. She is still looking for “smokin’ hot shoes”. Bethany is wearing a white suit and vest and plans to wear Adidas sneakers with pink accents.

The Menu: The food is outstanding at the Log Cabin and guests will have several food choices to pick from; including chicken, beef, seafood and vegetarian dishes. The almond flavored wedding cake will be decorated with accents of pink and green.

As the disc jockey, I’m alway’s on the lookout for potential issues that may arise during any reception. I’m in constant contact with the couple and with the other vendors to help ensure a smooth running event. Sometimes I don’t have the time to eat. The picture below represents my backup plan if needed.

The Party and Play List: I’m going to up light the Southampton Room which will be both a visual and stunning kickoff to the reception.

Bethany and Carrie’s play list is varied with an emphasis on R&B during the early portion of their event. I’ll be playing music from artists like Barry White, Roberta Flack, Al Green, Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye.

Once the party switches into high gear guests can expect to hear music from Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Black Eyed Peas as well as old school drops from the Bee Gee’s and Grandmaster Flash. I’m prepared to manage a spirited and active dance floor all evening. My brides intend to groove, party and celebrate until the last drink is served.

Bethany & Carrie’s Wedding Adventure

Over the next several weeks I plan to blog about two special clients (now friends) Bethany & Carrie. Their wedding is August 20 at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA and their Jill & Jill is July 31 at the Elks Club in West Springfield, MA. I’m Djing both events and can’t wait to drop the party bomb for both celebrations.

Our last meeting lasted over two hours as plans for their reception came together. Their excitement and enthusiasm was contagious and I don’t know who was more fired up “my brides”or me. We discussed entrance music for the bridal party as well as song choices for the grand entrance, first dance and cake cutting.

I am a big proponent of the grand entrance and what it stands for. With the right song it sets the tone early on that the couple of honor plan to celebrate, dance and party with family and friends. It’s also the first time that the couple can visually see their guests at the venue fully decorated with floral arrangements, colored table linens, up lighting and more.

I plan to coach “my brides” on how to acknowledge and absorb the love and positive energy they’ll feel once the doors open and they walk in. It’s a moment not discussed much but has a lasting impact. When that moment ends it’s gone forever.

There Is Just One Life For Each Of Us: Our Own (Euripides)

On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state in the country to legalize gay marriage. Gay and Lesbian couples now have a wide range of locations where they can marry.

Located at the extreme tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown is known for it’s beautiful beaches and reputation as a gay community. Boston provides same sex couples with a wide array of wedding options with it’s strong historic, artistic and cultural roots. In Western Massachusetts, Northampton is known as a liberal mecca with a strong LGBT population. The Berkshires offer venues as well. This region  is recognized for it’s performing arts and is a popular tourist attraction for many gay and lesbian couples.

I’ve entertained at a significant number of same sex weddings and celebration ceremonies. Each event is unique and distinctive and requires a disc jockey who is confident, comfortable and willing to go beyond expectations to make a special day even more memorable.
